The Philippines is an island country in Southeast Asia. Manila is the capital of the country. Luzon is the largest island in the Philippines. In addition, Quezon City is the most populous city in the country.
The Philippines has an irregular configuration of the archipelago. The coastline is 22,550 miles (36,290 km). In addition to this, the country has narrow and interrupted coastal plains, northward river systems, and spectacular lakes. The islands are composed of volcanic rock and corals. There are about 50 volcanoes in the Philippines. Out of them, 10 are known to be active.
The climate of the Philippines is tropical and monsoonal. There is heavy rainfall in all parts of the country. There is the heaviest rain along the eastern shores that face the Pacific Ocean. Apart from this, tropical cyclones (typhoons) often hit the Philippines from June to December.
Most of the forests are in northern Luzon. Most of the trees are pines. In other areas, lauan (Philippine mahogany) is predominant. There are more than 200 species of mammals and 2,000 varieties of fish.
The ethnic people of the Philippines are collectively called Filipinos. They consist of about 100 culturally and linguistically distinct ethnic groups. The largest of these is the Tagalog of Luzon and the Cebuano of the Visayan Islands. Each of them comprises about one-fifth of the country’s total population. In addition, other groups include the Ilocano of northern Luzon and the Hiligaynon (Ilongo) of the Visayan islands of Panay and Negros. They constitute one-tenth of the population each.
There are about 150 dialects spoken in the Philippines. But the national language of the country is Pilipino (Filipino). Apart from this, other languages are Tagalog, Cebuano, and Ilocano. Most of the population resides in rural areas. The Philippines is an agricultural country. Its economy is based on free enterprise.
About four-fifths of Filipinos follow Roman Catholicism. Christians constitute one-tenth of the population. The remaining are Muslim, Chinese, and others. The population density of the Philippines is high. But the distribution of population is uneven.
