Uzbekistan is a country in Central Asia. Islam is the dominant religion in Uzbekistan. The highest point in Uzbekistan is Khazret Sultan. It lies at 4,643 meters (15,233 ft) above sea level. The neighboring countries are Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan. Uzbekistan is also one of the largest Central Asian states. Also, it is the only Central Asian state to border all the other four.
Tashkent is the capital of Uzbekistan. Also, it is the largest city in Uzbekistan. The official language of the country is Uzbek. The currency of Uzbekistan is Uzbekistani som. Uzbeks comprise about 80% of the total population. The other communities are Tajiks, Kazakhs, Tatars, Russians, and Karakalpaks.
The climate in Uzbekistan is continental and arid. It has a little precipitation between 100–200 millimeters annually. The average summer high temperature is 40 °C (104 °F). And the average winter low temperature is around −23 °C.
Uzbekistan has a rich and diverse environment. The country has also gone through many natural catastrophic events. Some of them are the 1902 Andijan earthquake, the 2011 Fergana Valley earthquake. Also the 1966 Tashkent earthquake was a significant event.
Numerous oil and gas deposits are present in the south of Uzbekistan. The gold mines in Uzbekistan produce 80 tons of gold annually. This country is also a leading producer of cotton. Uzbekistan also has copper deposits and uranium deposits. The country’s uranium production is at the seventh position on the global level. Uzbekneftegaz, the Uzbek national gas company, is at 11th rank in the world in natural gas production. The company annually produces 60 to 70 billion cubic meters of natural gas. The country also has reserves of oil and gas. There are 194 deposits of hydrocarbons in Uzbekistan.
Since 2 March 1992, Uzbekistan has been a member of the United Nations. It is also a member of the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council (EAPC), Partnership for Peace.
In addition to this, Uzbekistan is also a member of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).
